She Keeps Bees

Club Shuffle continues at 229, bringing another eclectic and exciting line-up, compiled from the best of both the British and American music scenes. With Club Shuffle quickly garnering a reputation as being more than just a gig night with its warm and cosy atmosphere and alternate entertainment, it is quickly becoming a landmark event on the London live circuit.

Tonight is no different, She Keeps Bees are a rare entity, a minimalist setup with a rich, complex sound. Bluesy, overdriven guitar strums built around simple drum beats and an emotive, howling voice, the songs leave plenty of space for singer Jess Larrabee to fill with lovelorn stories and her breathtaking voice. he Keeps Bees album, Minisink Hotel, showcases a woman almost at breaking point, an internal struggle between right and wrong, exorcising every demon imaginable. Combative and honest lyrics portray Larrabee as world-weary and scarred from a variety of encounters. Lyrics dripping with doubt, confusion and anger are aimed at past-lovers, friends and just as equally, herself.

The live entity is just as haunting and electrifying, a visible cleanse of the soul and by the end it is almost believable that Larrabee’s angst has been, for the moment at least, tamed.
